A Winter Day Trip from Bar: Skiing at Kolašin

Most of what we write about is coastal: beaches, old towns, the Adriatic. This one's different. If you're in Bar during winter and want to see an entirely different side of Montenegro, the ski resorts around Kolašin are a genuinely worthwhile day trip, snow-covered mountains a couple of hours from where you're swimming in summer.

Where Kolašin actually is

Kolašin sits inland, up in the Bjelasica mountain range, roughly 110 kilometers from Bar by road. It's a real drive, somewhere in the neighborhood of an hour and forty minutes to two hours depending on conditions and traffic, so this is a proper day trip rather than a quick outing, similar in scale to a trip out to Durmitor. Worth checking current road and weather conditions before you commit to the day, since mountain roads in winter can add uncertainty that a coastal drive doesn't have.

What's actually there

The area has two connected ski centers, generally referred to as Kolašin 1450 and Kolašin 1600, named for their base elevations in meters. Between them they offer somewhere around 45 kilometers of groomed slopes across a range of elevations, from roughly 1,420 meters up past 2,000 meters at the higher points. It's a genuine, functioning ski operation, lifts, groomed runs, equipment rental on site, not an improvised setup.

Who this trip actually suits

This isn't a casual add-on to a beach holiday. If you or your group actually ski or snowboard and want a real day on the mountain, it's worth the drive. If you're just curious to see snow and mountain scenery without skiing yourself, the drive itself, through the changing landscape from coast to peaks, is worthwhile on its own, and Kolašin the town has its own quieter, alpine character worth a wander even without touching a ski.

Getting there without a car

The most straightforward way to reach Kolašin from Bar without your own vehicle is a taxi for the day, especially given the distance and the fact that public transport connections don't run on a schedule that suits a single-day round trip well. If you'd rather not drive yourself in unfamiliar winter mountain conditions, a taxi removes that risk entirely, you're not the one navigating switchbacks in the snow.

Worth knowing: Kolašin is also a stop on the Belgrade-Bar railway, the same line we've written about in depth in our scenic railway guide. If you'd rather take the train up and arrange a taxi only for getting around Kolašin itself, that's a genuine alternative to a full day trip by road, though it commits you to the train's schedule rather than your own.

Given the distance, this is a full-day commitment, not a half-day outing. Agree on a return pickup time with some flexibility built in, mountain conditions and ski-day timing rarely go exactly to plan, and pack for genuinely cold, wet weather even if you left a mild coastal morning behind in Bar.
