Bar to Lovćen National Park and the Njegoš Mausoleum

If you want the single best view in this part of Montenegro without committing to a full mountain expedition, Lovćen is it. A national park built around one dramatic peak rising behind Kotor and Cetinje, it's reachable as a solid half-day trip from Bar and rewards the climb with one of the widest panoramas the country has to offer.

Getting there

It's around 65 to 70 kilometers from Bar to the park, and because the road climbs steadily into the mountains, particularly the final approach, figure on a little over an hour of driving. The route generally follows a similar path toward Cetinje before branching up into the national park itself, which sits in the same mountain range just above the old capital.

The Njegoš Mausoleum

The park's centerpiece is the mausoleum of Petar II Petrović Njegoš, Montenegro's 19th century prince-bishop and one of its most important literary and political figures, sitting near the summit of Jezerski Vrh at 1,657 meters above sea level. Reaching it involves climbing 461 steps, most of them inside a long tunnel carved straight through the rock, a climb that typically takes 20 to 30 minutes at a steady pace.

The mausoleum itself, designed by the Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović and completed in 1974, is a striking piece of architecture in its own right: two monumental granite figures of Montenegrin women guard the entrance, and inside, a granite statue of Njegoš rests beneath the wings of an eagle, above a chamber decorated with a mosaic of some 200,000 gilded tiles. It's said to be among the highest mausoleums in the world, and standing at the summit it's easy to believe.

What makes the climb worth it, beyond the monument itself, is the view. From the top, on a clear day, you can see the Bay of Kotor spread out far below, along with a huge stretch of the surrounding karst landscape, jagged limestone ridges running off toward the horizon in every direction. It's a genuinely different perspective on the country than anything you get from the coast.

Planning the visit

Bring proper shoes for the steps and the tunnel, and a layer for the wind at the top, since it's noticeably cooler and breezier at this elevation than down on the coast, even in summer. The climb itself isn't technically difficult, but it is a sustained set of stairs, so it's worth pacing yourself rather than rushing.
