A Cruise Ship Day in Bar: Making the Most of a Short Port Call

If your ship's itinerary includes a stop in Bar, you've landed at Montenegro's largest port, and while it isn't the most famous cruise stop on the Adriatic (that's usually Kotor, further down the coast), it's a legitimate destination in its own right, and one where you can genuinely fit a lot into a single day if you plan ahead.

About the port

The Port of Bar, part of the wider Port of Adria complex, has been receiving cruise calls for a number of years now. It's a working port with cargo and container operations alongside the passenger side, so don't expect a resort-style arrivals experience. As of this writing, there's no dedicated cruise terminal building, so most passengers head into town via shuttle, taxi, or on foot, and organized excursions typically depart directly from the pier area.

Reports suggest it's a manageable walk from the cruise berth into central Bar, roughly 20 minutes or so along a flat, scenic route past the marina promenade, though this can vary depending on exactly where your ship docks. If you'd rather not walk, especially in summer heat, taxis and shuttles are the more comfortable option.

Making the day count

With a single port call, you're probably looking at somewhere between 6 and 10 hours ashore, depending on your ship's schedule, so the question is how to use that time well. A few realistic options:

Stay in Bar itself. The town has genuine attractions worth a few hours: Stari Bar, the atmospheric old town ruins set back from the coast, the King Nikola's Palace complex and its gardens, and the old olive tree that's reportedly among the oldest in Europe. This is the lower-effort, lower-risk option if your ship's timing is tight or unpredictable.

Head further afield. If your call is long enough and you're comfortable with some travel time, destinations like Budva or even Kotor are within reach for an ambitious day, though you'd want a taxi or organized tour rather than public transport given the time pressure. Split the difference. A shorter trip to somewhere closer within Bar municipality, like Stari Bar or Šušanj, gives you a change of scenery without the same time risk as a longer excursion.

Whatever you decide, build in a real buffer before your ship's departure. Traffic, an unexpectedly long lunch, or a taxi that takes a few extra minutes to arrive can eat into your margin fast, and missing a ship is about as bad as travel days get.
