Cycling Around Bar Municipality: Routes and Taxi Support for Point-to-Point Rides

Bar municipality is genuinely good cycling country if you don't mind some climbing. The coastal strip is flat and easy, and once you head inland toward Crmnica or up toward the hills, the terrain gets more interesting and the traffic thins out fast. The one thing that trips a lot of cyclists up here is the shape of the terrain: get yourself up a hill or out along a coastal road, and you may not feel like riding all the way back the same way you came. That's where a taxi comes in.

What the terrain looks like

The coast between Bar, Sutomore, and Čanj is mostly flat and rideable, with the main road carrying regular traffic, so quieter side roads closer to the water are generally the more pleasant option. Inland, the Crmnica field around Virpazar is a different kind of riding: open, fertile, gently rolling, and considerably quieter than the coast. It's also the region we cover for its wine and olive oil in a separate guide, which is worth a read if you want the fuller picture of what's growing out there, we won't repeat that here.

One practical note if you're routing yourself with a map: the Sozina tunnel, the toll road that connects the coast to the interior toward Podgorica, isn't passable by bicycle. Cyclists heading that direction use the older surface roads instead, which are slower but far more scenic, running close to Lake Skadar in places.

Point-to-point riding with taxi support

The classic problem with cycling somewhere scenic is that "scenic" often means "uphill," and nobody particularly enjoys riding back down the same climb they just fought their way up, or worse, riding it in reverse. A simple fix: take a taxi with your bike to your starting point, ride one direction, and either get picked up at the far end or make your way back under your own power once the hard part's done.

This works well in a few directions around Bar. You might get dropped somewhere up in the hills and coast most of the way back down to the coast. Or get taken out toward Virpazar and cycle back along the lake roads at your own pace, stopping wherever you like. The point is flexibility: you're not locked into an out-and-back route just because that's the only way to guarantee you end up back where you started.

A few practical notes if you're planning this: let the driver know in advance that you'll have a bike, since space depends on the vehicle. And remember our pickup zone only covers Opština Bar (Bar, Sutomore, Čanj, Dobra Voda, Šušanj, Stari Bar, Virpazar, Utjeha), though drop-off can be anywhere, so plan routes that start inside that zone even if they finish well outside it. Full detail on the zone is in our airport transfers guide.

Beyond the bike logistics, a bit of common-sense planning goes a long way here. Roads inland can be narrow and winding, particularly the older surface roads near the lake, so daylight riding is worth prioritizing over an early or late-evening start. Water matters more than people expect once you're away from the coast, since shade and shops both thin out the further inland you go, so carry more than you think you'll need. And if you're not confident about the climb on a given route, that's exactly the situation the taxi-supported approach is built for: ride the flatter or downhill half, skip the part that would otherwise put you off the whole idea.

If you'd rather hike than pedal

If climbing is more your thing than cycling, Mount Rumija is the obvious next step, and we've already written a full guide to hiking Rumija and getting to the trailhead by taxi, so we won't cover the same ground here.

Fuel up along the way
