Taxi from Bar to Tirana Airport: Crossing into Albania

Tirana Airport, officially Tirana International Airport Nënë Tereza, is the other cross-border option for travelers based around Bar, and for some routes and dates it's genuinely the better choice over flying out of Montenegro. It's a longer drive than any of the in-country runs, and like the Dubrovnik route, it means crossing an international border, this time into Albania.

The route and the distance

From Bar, this trip heads south along the coast, through Ulcinj, one of Montenegro's southernmost towns and home to some of its longest sandy beaches, and on to the border crossing near the village of Sukobin. Once you're through, the road continues via Shkodër and down toward Tirana. In total, it's roughly 150 to 160 kilometers, and the drive typically takes somewhere around two and a half to three hours, depending on how the border is running and traffic conditions on the Albanian side.

The border crossing

The crossing here is Sukobin on the Montenegrin side, matched with Muriqan on the Albanian side, in Shkodër County. It opened as a joint crossing point in 2009 and has become the main coastal route between the two countries, used by tourists and locals alike. It runs 24 hours a day. Wait times tend to be shorter and more predictable than at the Croatian crossing, generally ranging from a handful of minutes off-season up to something closer to an hour or so on the busiest summer days, though as with any border, conditions can shift.

You'll need a valid passport to cross, and it's worth keeping it somewhere accessible in the car rather than packed away, since you'll need to present it at the checkpoint. The stretch through Ulcinj on the way down is worth a mention too. It's a town with a noticeably different character from the coast further north, shaped by centuries as an Adriatic port and trading town, with one of the longest sandy beaches in Montenegro running south from it toward the Albanian border.

What it costs

This is the longest single route in this guide by distance, so it's also going to carry the highest fare. It falls under the intercity tariff tier, with a 1.75 euro per-kilometer rate through in-city stretches (Bar and Ulcinj, mainly) and the standard 5 euro minimum with a 1.10 euro per-kilometer rate for the open road, which covers the majority of this particular trip. As with any border crossing, if you end up waiting at the checkpoint past the free three minutes, the standard 0.20 euro per minute waiting rate applies.

Roughly what to budget. For a trip of around 155 kilometers, mostly at the open-road rate, the distance charge comes out to somewhere near €170, plus the 1 euro boarding fee, putting a reasonable planning figure in the range of €160 to €180. As with any longer route, the exact fare depends on the in-city versus open-road split and any time spent waiting at the border, so treat this as a starting point for budgeting rather than an exact quote.

Comparing it to the Dubrovnik run

If you're deciding between Tirana and Dubrovnik as your departure airport, it's worth knowing the Sukobin-Muriqan crossing into Albania tends to see lighter and more predictable traffic than the Croatian crossing near Herceg Novi, particularly in peak summer, when the Croatia-bound queues can run considerably longer. That's not a guarantee, borders are borders, but it's a reasonable factor to weigh alongside flight prices and schedules when you're choosing between the two. Planning ahead

Pickup still has to start in Bar municipality

As with every route in this guide, we can only collect you if your pickup point is inside Opština Bar: Bar itself, Sutomore, Čanj, Dobra Voda, Šušanj, Stari Bar, Virpazar, or Utjeha. Where the trip starts is what matters for licensing, not where it ends, so once you're picked up legally within that zone, crossing into Albania for your flight is entirely straightforward.

The same logic means we can't work the return direction. Tirana Airport sits in Albania, outside our licensed pickup zone, so a trip from there back to Bar would need to be arranged with a locally licensed Albanian taxi or transfer service, at least until you're back across the border.
