How Far in Advance Should You Book an Airport Transfer from Bar?

This is one of the most common questions we get, and the honest answer is: it depends a lot more on the season and the route than most people expect. A short hop to Podgorica Airport in November has completely different timing needs than a cross-border run to Dubrovnik on a Saturday in August.

The short answer

In the off-season, roughly October through May, you can usually get a car with just a few hours of notice, sometimes less. In peak summer, June through September, and especially in July and August, we'd recommend booking at least the day before, and ideally with a bit more lead time for longer or cross-border trips.

Why summer changes everything

Montenegro's coast gets genuinely busy in the summer months, and it's not just about more cars on the road, though that's part of it. Hotels and apartments turn over on similar weekly schedules, so airport-bound traffic tends to cluster around the same days and times, particularly Saturdays. The coastal road through Budva, which most Tivat-bound and cross-border trips pass through, sees noticeably heavier traffic in these months, and what would be a 20-minute stretch in March can take considerably longer in August.

If you're booking a car on short notice during peak season, you're competing with a lot of other travelers doing the same thing at the same time, which is the main reason lead time matters more in summer than the actual driving distance does.

Bar is also home to Montenegro's main international ferry port, with regular sailings across the Adriatic to Bari in Italy. On days when a ferry is loading or unloading, the streets right around the port area can see a short-lived crunch of extra traffic, cars, foot passengers, and freight all converging at once. It's very localized and doesn't affect routes that don't pass through that part of town, but if your pickup point is near the port itself, it's one more reason a little extra buffer is a good habit in peak season.

Border crossings add their own variable

If your route crosses into Croatia or Albania, seasonal timing gets even more important. The Debeli Brijeg crossing into Croatia, the one most Dubrovnik-bound traffic uses, can see wait times stretch out considerably on peak summer weekends, sometimes running to a few hours on the worst days, though it's usually much quicker outside of that window. The Sukobin crossing into Albania tends to move a bit more predictably, but it's still a border, and borders are never entirely without surprises.

Because of this, for any cross-border trip, whether that's Bar to Dubrovnik Airport or Bar to Tirana Airport, we'd suggest treating our stated drive times as a starting point rather than a guarantee, and building in extra buffer before your flight, particularly in July and August. A rough guide by route

For a short, in-country trip like Bar to Podgorica Airport, a few hours of notice is usually plenty, even in summer, since the drive stays under an hour either way.

For the longer coastal run to Bar to Tivat Airport, which passes through Budva, we'd suggest booking the evening before during peak season, simply to account for traffic variability.

For either cross-border trip, book at least a day ahead in summer, and give yourself extra time before your flight beyond what the drive alone would suggest.

For any of the routes starting outside Bar itself, whether that's Sutomore, Čanj, Dobra Voda, or Virpazar, the same seasonal logic applies. The starting point changes the exact drive time slightly, but the underlying advice, book further ahead in peak summer and for anything crossing a border, holds across the whole municipality.

Early flights and late arrivals

If you've got a very early departure, say before 6 a.m., it's worth booking your ride the night before regardless of season, just so a car is confirmed rather than something you're trying to arrange half asleep. The same logic applies in reverse for late-night arrivals: booking ahead means someone is actually there waiting for you rather than you trying to find a ride at an airport at midnight.
