Sailing and Boat Trips from Bar: What's on the Water

Bar sits right on the Adriatic, so it's no surprise the water is part of the draw. This isn't about the marina or arriving by ferry, that's covered in our guide to arriving in Bar by sea, rail, and road. This is about the other direction: taking a boat trip out from Bar as a visitor, for the afternoon or the day.

What's typically on offer

Along this stretch of coast, day boat trips generally fall into a few categories. There are shorter coastal runs that stick close to Bar and nearby towns like Sutomore and Čanj, giving you a look at the coastline from the water rather than the road. There are longer excursions that head further along the Adriatic, sometimes toward Budva or the Bay of Kotor, for a full day out. Operators along the coast run everything from smaller motorboats and private charters to larger group excursions, and the exact lineup changes season to season and even week to week. If you're after something specific, like a sunset run or a particular stretch of coastline, it's worth checking directly with operators in Bar or Sutomore once you're here rather than booking sight unseen months in advance. Some excursion operators in the area also run trips further north to explore the Bay of Kotor's old wartime tunnels and former naval installations, a different kind of outing from a typical coastal cruise if that's of interest.

When the season runs

Boat trips on this coast are a warm-weather thing. Broadly speaking, the season runs roughly from May through November, with the calmest water and most reliable operator schedules in the peak summer months. Outside that window, fewer boats are running and the sea can be rougher, so if a day on the water is a priority, plan your visit accordingly.

Getting to the dock

This is the part where a taxi actually matters. Boat departures tend to have a fixed time, and unlike a lot of the coastline where you can wander and figure it out as you go, missing a scheduled departure means missing the trip entirely. A taxi timed to get you to the dock with a bit of a buffer takes that variable off the table, especially if you're coming from a hotel in Sutomore or Čanj rather than staying right in Bar.

Same logic applies at the end of the day. Boat trips often come back into port at odd hours, sometimes right around sunset when everyone else is also looking for a ride, so having a car booked in advance for the return leg is worth the two minutes it takes to arrange.
