Bar to Ulcinj Day Trip: Beaches and Ada Bojana
Ulcinj is the odd one out in this guide in a good way. Instead of walled towns or mountain views, this is a straightforward beach day, and it's close enough from Bar that it barely counts as a detour. Montenegro's southernmost coastal town has a genuinely different feel from anywhere north of it, closer in atmosphere to the Albanian coast just beyond it than to Budva or Kotor.
The drive
It's a short one, around 25 to 30 kilometers south of Bar, and generally somewhere around 30 to 40 minutes depending on traffic. This is the easiest, lowest-commitment trip in this whole cluster, which makes it a good option if you want a full beach day without eating most of it up in the car.
What makes Ulcinj's coastline different
The sand here is different from what you'll find around Bar itself: darker, finer, and rich in minerals that locals have long believed have therapeutic properties. Velika Plaža, the "Great Beach," runs for several kilometers along the coast and is one of the longest sand beaches on the whole Adriatic, wide and open in a way that's uncommon on this generally rocky, cliff-backed coastline.
Further south, Ada Bojana is the real highlight for a lot of visitors: a triangular island formed where the Bojana River splits and meets the sea, bordered by the river on two sides and open Adriatic on the third. It has a genuinely remote, wild feel, backed by sand dunes and wetlands that serve as an important stop for migratory birds, and the strong, steady coastal winds here have made it one of the region's better-known windsurfing and kitesurfing spots. It's a very different kind of beach day from anything closer to Bar, quieter, wilder, and shaped by the river as much as the sea.
If beach time is really what you're after and you'd rather not make the drive at all, it's worth knowing Bar municipality has its own good stretch of coastline too. Our roundup of the best beaches around Bar covers those closer options if Ulcinj ends up being more trip than you want.
What it costs
Being the shortest trip in this whole cluster, Ulcinj is also the most affordable, generally running somewhere around €35 to €45 one way under the intercity tariff, with the exact fare confirmed by the meter or app estimate at time of booking.
Booking
Book through the Greencar.me Taxi app or the App Store, with pickup starting inside Bar municipality. Ulcinj falls under its own municipal taxi licensing and outside our pickup zone, so a return trip from there needs a locally licensed taxi.
