Best Beaches in Bar Municipality (and How to Get Between Them by Taxi)

Bar municipality has six distinct beach settlements strung along roughly 25 kilometers of coastline, and they're different enough from each other that "which beach should I go to" doesn't really have one right answer. It depends what you want out of the day. Here's how they compare, and what it actually takes to get between them.

Šušanj: the closest, the easiest

Šušanj sits just south of Bar's town center, close enough to walk from many hotels, and it's the obvious choice if you want a beach afternoon without committing to a longer trip. It's a genuinely local beach, less built up than Sutomore, with a straightforward run of cafés along the front. Good for pairing with a morning in Bar itself, less good if you're chasing the municipality's most dramatic scenery.

Sutomore: the family-friendly one

Sutomore has the longest, sandiest beach in the municipality, backed by a proper promenade and hotel strip, with small islands visible offshore. It's about 8 kilometers north of Bar, a suburban-tier taxi ride. If you want space, sand underfoot rather than pebbles, and a wider choice of restaurants right on the beach, this is usually the pick.

Čanj: the one with the rock pools

Čanj, a bit further north past Sutomore, is known for the natural rock pool carved into the stone at one end of its beach, deep enough to swim through and come out the other side. It's also called Pearl Beach locally for the round pebbles on its northern stretch. If you want a beach with a genuine talking point rather than just sand and sun, this is it.

Dobra Voda: the quiet in-between

Dobra Voda sits between Čanj and Sutomore, more a scattered string of smaller beaches than a single town center. It's the pick for anyone who's already done a busier beach and wants a calmer version of the same coastline, without the crowds or the restaurant strip.

Utjeha: the quietest of all

South of Bar, past Šušanj, Utjeha is the smallest and least developed beach settlement in the municipality. There's not much infrastructure, which is exactly why some visitors seek it out specifically, a genuinely secluded pebble cove rather than anywhere resembling a resort.

Not a beach, but worth knowing about: Virpazar

Virpazar doesn't have a beach in the coastal sense, it sits inland on Lake Skadar, but it's part of the same municipality and worth factoring into a longer stay. See our Skadar Lake day trip guide if a change of scenery from sand and sea sounds appealing.

Realistic taxi times between the beaches

None of these towns are far apart in absolute terms, this whole stretch of coast is under half an hour end to end by car, but the fare structure matters more than the distance. Trips that stay within a town's immediate center fall into the cheaper-per-ride but higher-per-kilometer in-city tier, while anything crossing between towns typically lands in the suburban tier, which has a higher minimum but a noticeably lower per-kilometer rate. In practice this means hopping between two or three beach towns in a single day is genuinely affordable, not just theoretically possible.

Planning a beach-hopping day

A reasonable pattern: start at whichever beach is closest to where you're staying in the morning when it's quieter, move to a second town for lunch and an afternoon swim, and time your last taxi back for early evening before the heat breaks and everyone else has the same idea. Book each leg through the Greencar.me Taxi app, also on the App Store, as you go rather than trying to schedule an entire day in advance, these are short, flexible hops and same-day booking works fine.

If you'd rather treat the whole idea of beach-hopping without a car as a broader case for skipping the rental altogether, we make that argument in more depth in a day without a rental car.

For the full picture on pricing and the pickup zone across the municipality, see our local taxi guide overview. Remember that pickup has to start inside Opština Bar, which covers every beach on this list, so any combination of these towns works freely.
