Choosing Your Day Trip: A Quick Guide for Every Kind of Traveler

With this many options out of Bar, the harder part often isn't the drive, it's deciding where to go. Here's a straightforward way to sort through it, organized by what you're actually looking for rather than by distance or price.

If you're here for the history

Start with Kotor, Montenegro's best-preserved walled Old Town, or go a step further into the country's past with Cetinje, the old royal capital where King Nikola's Palace and the former foreign legation buildings tell the story of a small kingdom that once mattered a great deal on the European stage. If you want both eras of history in one region, Kotor and Cetinje sit close enough together that some travelers combine a version of both into a longer day.

If you want nature and mountains

Lovćen National Park is the easier, more manageable choice, a half-day trip that rewards a 461-step climb with one of the best panoramic views in the country, the Bay of Kotor spread out far below. If you've got more time, or you're planning an overnight rather than a single day, Durmitor National Park and Žabljak is the real mountain experience, glacial lakes, alpine forest, and Montenegro's highest peaks, but it's a genuinely long drive and worth reading our honest take on the timing before you commit.

If beaches are the priority

Bar municipality has its own good beaches, covered in our local beach roundup, so a day trip isn't strictly necessary if sand and sea are all you want. But if you're after something different from Bar's own coastline, Ulcinj, with its long stretch of dark, mineral-rich sand and the wild river-delta island of Ada Bojana, is a short, easy drive south and a genuinely different landscape from anywhere north of Bar.

If you're drawn to religious or pilgrimage sites

Ostrog Monastery is the clear answer here, a monastery built directly into a cliff face and the most significant Orthodox pilgrimage site in the region, worth visiting for the architecture and the setting alone regardless of personal faith. Cetinje Monastery, part of a trip to Cetinje, is a quieter second option if you want to pair a religious site with the old capital's other history.

If you just want the classic coastal postcard

Budva is the easiest and closest option, with its walled Old Town and the famous view of Sveti Stefan just down the coast. If you have a full day and want to see more of the Bay of Kotor properly, the combined loop through Kotor, Perast, and Budva covers all three of the region's best-known stops in a single, well-planned day.

If you're not sure how much time you actually have

Roughly speaking: Budva, Kotor, and Ulcinj are the easiest half-day-to-full-day trips with the shortest drives. Cetinje, Perast, Lovćen, and Ostrog are a step up, comfortable full days with more driving but nothing exhausting. Herceg Novi and Nikšić are longer still, doable but worth an earlier start. And Durmitor stands alone as the trip that deserves either a very long single day or, better, an overnight, which we've laid out plainly in its own guide.
