Sutomore Beach Guide: What to Know and How to Get Around by Taxi

Sutomore is the municipality's other real town, and it has a different energy than Bar itself, a bit more resort, a bit less port. If Bar feels like a working town that happens to be on the coast, Sutomore feels like a beach town that happens to have a working railway station.

The beach and the setting

Sutomore's main beach is long and mostly sandy, backed by a promenade and a run of hotels and apartment buildings, with green hills rising steeply behind the town. A couple of small islands sit just offshore, adding a nice bit of visual interest if you're swimming out a little way. It's a family-friendly stretch, wide enough that even in peak summer it doesn't feel as packed as some of the more famous beaches further up the Montenegrin coast.

Getting there and around

Sutomore sits roughly 8 kilometers north of Bar along the coast road, which puts it comfortably in the suburban fare tier for a taxi from Bar, a boarding charge plus the out-of-town minimum and per-kilometer rate, generally a better deal per kilometer than a short in-city hop. It's an easy add-on if you're staying in Bar and want a change of beach for the day, or if you're based in Sutomore and want to get into Bar for the palace, the old olive tree, or dinner somewhere with more restaurant choice.

Within Sutomore itself, the town center and beachfront are walkable, most hotels sit within a few minutes of the water. A taxi becomes useful once you want to head toward Čanj, the next beach town south, or back down toward Bar for the evening.

What else is nearby

Sutomore also has a small train station on the Bar-to-Belgrade line, which some visitors use for day trips inland, though that's outside what we cover here. Closer to home, it's worth knowing that Sutomore sits near the northern entrance to the Sozina Tunnel, the road link that cuts through to the Podgorica side, which matters if you're connecting onward to the airport rather than just staying on the coast for the day.
