Čanj Beach Guide: Montenegro's Rock-Pool Coastline by Taxi

Čanj is the kind of beach town people describe by pointing at a photo rather than trying to explain it in words. It's small, it's a little rougher around the edges than Sutomore, and it has a genuinely distinctive stretch of coastline that sets it apart from most of the other beaches in the municipality.

What makes Čanj different

The main beach runs about a kilometer long, sandy in the middle with pebbles and smooth round stones toward the edges, and it's sometimes called Pearl Beach locally for those rounded stones that show up on the northern end. The real draw, though, is the rock formation at one side of the beach, where the water has carved out a natural pool in the stone a few meters deep. You can swim into it and come out the other side, a genuinely fun bit of natural playground that photographs beautifully and feels a little bit like discovering something, even though plenty of people know about it by now.

There's also a quieter, less crowded stretch tucked away on the far side of the beach, if you'd rather skip the busier middle section entirely.

Getting there by taxi

Čanj sits north of Bar, past Sutomore, roughly in the same general direction along the coast road. From Bar, that puts it in the suburban fare tier, a boarding charge plus the out-of-town minimum and per-kilometer rate. It also works well as a same-day pairing with Sutomore, the two towns are close enough that beach-hopping between them in a single afternoon is a reasonable plan, and closer still to Dobra Voda just to the north.

Once you're in Čanj itself, the town is small enough to walk everywhere, the beach, the handful of restaurants, the main road. A taxi is really about getting to and from Čanj, not around it.

When to go

Like most of this coastline, Čanj gets busiest in July and August. The rock pools in particular can get crowded midday in peak season, so if you want them closer to yourself, mornings are a better bet.
