Night and Holiday Airport Transfers from Bar

Flights don't always land or depart at convenient hours, and a lot of the airport transfers we run out of Bar happen well before sunrise or well after dark. If you've got a red-eye departure or a late arrival, here's what changes about your ride, and what doesn't.

What actually changes at night

Montenegro's taxi tariff system has a separate rate tier for night and public holiday trips, sometimes called Tarifa 2. The main difference from the standard daytime rate is the in-city per-kilometer charge, which rises from 1.45 euros to 1.75 euros. The boarding charge stays the same at 1 euro, and importantly, the out-of-town rate, the one that applies to most of an airport run, stays at 1.10 euros per kilometer either way, with the same 5 euro minimum.

What this means in practice: for most airport trips, which spend the bulk of their distance outside city limits, the night rate difference is smaller than people often expect, since it mainly affects the shorter in-town portion of the drive rather than the long open-road stretch. A late-night trip to Podgorica Airport or Tivat Airport will cost a bit more than the same trip in daylight, but not dramatically more, since the higher rate only touches a small slice of the total distance.

Why booking ahead matters more at night

The bigger practical difference at night isn't the fare, it's availability. Fewer cars are actively working the roads at 3 a.m. than at 3 p.m., which is simply a matter of staffing. If you've got an early morning flight and you wait until the night before, or worse, the morning of, to try to book, you're relying on whichever cars happen to be free at that hour. Booking further ahead through the Greencar.me Taxi app, on Android or the App Store for iPhone, means a car is confirmed and assigned to you well before you actually need it, which matters a lot more for a 4 a.m. pickup than for a mid-afternoon one.

This is especially worth thinking about for the longer routes. A late-night departure for Tivat Airport, which already takes over an hour, or worse, a red-eye connection through Dubrovnik or Tirana with a border crossing in the dark, is exactly the kind of trip where booking ahead removes a genuine source of stress. A short hop to Podgorica Airport is more forgiving simply because it's such a quick trip either way.

Late arrivals work the same way in reverse

If your flight lands at midnight or later, the same night tariff applies for the ride from the airport back to your accommodation, and the same booking logic applies too. Arranging your pickup in advance, rather than trying to find a taxi cold at an airport arrivals hall at 1 a.m., means someone is actually there waiting when you land, which is worth the small amount of planning it takes.

Public holidays follow the same rate

The night tariff also applies on Montenegrin public holidays, regardless of time of day, so if your travel dates happen to land on one, the same in-city rate increase applies as it would at night. This is a fairly minor consideration for most visitors but worth knowing if your trip happens to coincide with a local holiday.

Practically speaking, this mostly matters for anyone traveling around New Year's or other national holidays that fall mid-trip. It's not something that should change your plans, just something worth factoring in if you're budgeting a transfer down to the last euro.

Pickup zone still applies, day or night

What does change is that booking ahead becomes more valuable overnight simply because fewer cars are circulating, so it's worth building that into your planning regardless of which pickup town you're in.
