Taxi from Bar to Podgorica Airport: Distance, Time, and What to Expect

Of all the airport runs out of Bar, this is the one we do most often, and it's also the shortest by a fair margin. If you're catching a flight out of Podgorica Airport (TGD), officially the airport is near the village of Golubovci, here's what the ride actually looks like.

Why it's quicker than people expect

A lot of visitors assume the drive from the coast to the capital is going to eat up most of a morning, and before 2005 that would have been a fair assumption. The road used to climb over the Paštrovska Gora mountain range on a slow, winding route. Then the Sozina Tunnel opened, cutting straight through the mountain between Sutomore and the inland town of Virpazar, and it shortened the Bar-to-Podgorica run by roughly 25 kilometers.

These days, the drive is around 33 kilometers door to door and generally takes somewhere in the neighborhood of half an hour to 45 minutes, depending on the time of day and how busy the tunnel approach is. It's genuinely one of the more painless airport transfers in this part of the Balkans.

What the drive looks like

You'll head north out of Bar along the coast road toward Sutomore, then peel off inland just before you'd otherwise keep following the shoreline. The tunnel itself takes a few minutes to pass through (it's about 4.2 kilometers long), and there's a toll collected at the entrance, which is built into your fare rather than something you'll need to handle separately.

Once you're through, the landscape changes fast. Instead of sea and cliffs, you're driving along the edge of the Zeta plain with Lake Skadar visible off to one side on a clear day, the largest lake in Southern Europe and a genuinely different Montenegro than the coastal strip most visitors see. From there it's a fairly straight run into Golubovci and the airport itself.

Because the whole trip stays inside Montenegro and follows one of the country's more heavily used road corridors, it's also one of the more predictable transfers we run. There's no border stop to plan around here, and the road surface and signage on this stretch of highway are in solid condition, so surprises are rare.

What to expect on arrival

Podgorica Airport is a compact, single-terminal airport, so once you're dropped at departures you're not looking at a long walk or a shuttle bus to get to check-in. Coming the other direction, arrivals and the pickup area sit close together too, which makes meeting a driver straightforward if you're timing a return trip. If you're connecting through Podgorica rather than starting or ending your trip there, it's worth building in the usual buffer for domestic transfer time, though that's really an airport question rather than a taxi one.

What it costs

This trip falls into the out-of-town fare tier, which is actually the better deal per kilometer once you're past the initial minimum. You'll pay the 1 euro boarding charge, then the out-of-town minimum of 5 euros, with a per-kilometer rate of 1.10 euros for a standard daytime ride. At night or on a public holiday, the boarding charge and out-of-town per-kilometer rate stay the same, since the night surcharge in Montenegro's tariff system mainly affects the in-city portion of a trip, not the open-road stretch. Because this is a fixed, familiar route for us, the fare estimate you'll see in the Greencar.me Taxi app before you confirm the booking should match closely with what shows on the meter at the end.

Roughly what to budget. Running the numbers on the standard formula, a 33-kilometer daytime trip works out to about 1 euro boarding plus roughly 36 euros of distance charge, so somewhere in the neighborhood of €35 to €40 total is a reasonable ballpark for planning purposes. That figure excludes any waiting time beyond the free three minutes and is an estimate rather than a quote, the exact fare always comes from the meter or the in-app estimate at the time you book, but it should give you a realistic sense of what to set aside.

Booking the ride

You can book through the Greencar.me Taxi app (also on the App Store), and since this is a short, well-known route, you generally don't need a huge amount of lead time outside of peak summer weekends, when the road can see more traffic than usual. If you're cutting it close on an early morning flight, it's still worth booking the night before just so a car is confirmed and waiting rather than something you're arranging half asleep at 4 a.m. Our guide on how far ahead to book covers this in more depth.

Traveling with a fair amount of luggage isn't really a concern on this route either way, since the fleet we run is newer and kept in good condition, with proper trunk space for a couple of suitcases, which matters more on longer hauls but is still nice to have on a short one.

Remember: pickup has to start in Bar municipality

One quick but important note if you're comparing this route to others: we can only pick you up if you're starting inside Opština Bar, which covers Bar itself along with Sutomore, Čanj, Dobra Voda, Šušanj, Stari Bar, Virpazar, and Utjeha. If you happen to be staying in Podgorica already and need a ride the other direction, that's outside our licensed pickup zone and you'd want a Podgorica-based taxi instead. Where we can pick you up, though, we can take you anywhere, including across the border if that's where your onward flight departs from.

One thing worth flagging clearly: the pickup rule applies on the way back too. Podgorica Airport sits outside Opština Bar, so we're not licensed to pick you up there for a return trip into Bar. If you're landing in Podgorica and heading to Bar, you'd want a Podgorica-based taxi for that leg.
