The Scenic Way to Tivat Airport: Bar to Tivat Along the Coast

Most of the time, an airport transfer is just a means to an end, something to get through so you can get to the actual trip. The drive from Bar to Tivat is a bit of an exception. Even without any detours, the standard route happens to pass through some of the most striking coastline on the Adriatic, and it's worth knowing what you're looking at along the way.

Leaving Bar

The drive starts along Bar's own stretch of coast, past the marina and the long shingle beach that runs north out of town. Bar itself sits at the base of low hills, with olive groves, some reportedly among the oldest cultivated olive trees in the region, dotting the slopes above the road.

Through Sutomore and Čanj

Heading north, the road passes Sutomore, a smaller beach town with a sheltered bay, and continues on toward Čanj, known for its long pebble beach backed by pine forest. This stretch of coast is quieter than what's further ahead, still very much Montenegro's working coastline rather than a resort strip.

Budva and the Budva Riviera

The road then runs into Budva, one of the most visited towns on the Montenegrin coast, with a walled old town perched right on the water that dates back over two thousand years in some form. You won't necessarily drive directly through the old town on a through-route, but you'll see its walls and rooftops from the road, along with the crescent of beaches that make up the wider Budva Riviera. This is generally the busiest stretch of the whole drive, especially in summer, simply because it's the most popular part of the coast to stay.

Rounding the Bay of Kotor

After Budva, the road curves inland slightly before opening up onto the Bay of Kotor, and this is really the centerpiece of the drive. The bay is often described as fjord-like, with steep mountains rising almost straight out of the water on both sides, though technically it's a submerged river canyon rather than a true fjord. Either way, it's one of the more dramatic pieces of coastline in Europe, and the road offers genuine views of it rather than just glimpses.

Rather than following the older road all the way around the bay past Kotor's old town, most transfers now use the Vrmac Tunnel, a roughly 1.6 kilometer tunnel that cuts under the Vrmac ridge separating Kotor Bay from Tivat Bay. It's a practical shortcut, saving time and a set of winding switchbacks, though it does mean you'll see less of Kotor town itself than the old route would offer. If you'd rather take the longer way around the bay for the views, it's worth mentioning to your driver when you book, since it will add some time to the trip.

Arriving in Tivat

On the far side of the tunnel, the road drops down toward Tivat Bay, generally calmer and a bit less dramatic than Kotor Bay, but still a pleasant final stretch before reaching the airport itself, which sits right on the water's edge.

Best time of day for the views

Light matters a lot on this drive. Late afternoon, with the sun lower over the water, tends to bring out the color in the bay in a way that flat midday light doesn't. Early morning has its own appeal too, quieter roads and softer light, especially useful if you're trying to beat the Budva traffic anyway. If you'd like a brief pull-off somewhere along the way for a photo, it's worth mentioning when you book so your driver knows there's no rush.

In short: roughly 60 to 65 kilometers, somewhere around an hour to an hour and a half depending on Budva traffic, and priced under the standard out-of-town tariff of a 5 euro minimum plus 1.10 euros per kilometer.

A note on timing

If you want to actually take in the drive rather than rush through it, this isn't really the trip to book with fifteen minutes of buffer before your flight. Give yourself the full amount of time the route normally takes, and then some in peak summer, when Budva traffic can add a genuine chunk of time.
