The Scenic Way to Podgorica Airport: Bar to Podgorica via the Sozina Tunnel and Lake Skadar

The drive from Bar to Podgorica Airport is short, usually under 45 minutes, but it packs in a genuine change of scenery that a lot of visitors don't expect from what's otherwise a routine transfer. In the space of half an hour, you go from Mediterranean coastline to a completely different landscape built around Southern Europe's largest lake.

Leaving the coast

The route starts along the coast road north of Bar, through olive groves and past the edge of Sutomore, before turning inland toward the mountains. This is the last coastal scenery you'll see for the trip, so it's worth a glance back if you've got a window seat.

Into the Sozina Tunnel

The tunnel itself is around 4.2 kilometers long and cuts straight through the Paštrovska Gora mountain range, the barrier that separates the coast from the inland Zeta plain. Before it opened in 2005, this same trip meant a slow, winding climb over the mountains. Now it's a few minutes of driving underground, and the road on the other side opens onto an entirely different Montenegro.

Lake Skadar

On the far side of the tunnel, the road runs close to Lake Skadar, a vast lake shared between Montenegro and Albania and the largest in Southern Europe. Depending on the light and the season, you might catch views of reed-lined shores, small fishing villages, and wetlands that are home to a wide range of birdlife, a genuinely different pace and landscape from the coast, only a few minutes away by tunnel.

Onto the Zeta plain

From the lake, the road continues across the flatter Zeta plain toward Golubovci and the airport. This stretch is less dramatic than the lake views, open agricultural land mostly, but it's a quick final leg before you arrive.

Best time of day for the views

Because the drive is short, timing matters less here than it does on the longer coastal route, but early morning tends to bring a soft mist over the lake that's worth seeing if your flight schedule allows for it. Given how brief the lake-facing stretch is, there isn't much opportunity for a proper photo stop on a standard transfer, but it's a genuinely different landscape to take in even from the car window.
